The Malott Family Research Apprenticeship Program provides Chicago-area high school students the opportunity work alongside zoo researchers and engage in authentic scientific research. This is an eight-week paid apprenticeship which takes place from late June through mid-August. During the program, apprentices will work with researchers in one of the zoo’s science centers. Apprentices working with the Urban Wildlife Institute, will mostly conduct field-based research, while apprentices working with the Davee Center for Epidemiology and Endocrinology, will mostly conduct lab-based research. Past participants have helped scientists with a variety of different research projects, including biodiversity monitoring at Lincoln Park Zoo’s Nature Boardwalk and hormone analysis of animals at the zoo to measure stress and reproductive levels. Program Details As apprentices, participating youth will learn more about this career path while gaining experience in conservation research activities. The program will provide apprentices with support to fully integrate the experience into their academic goals, career plans and areas of personal strength.
