Most semesters we get students from neighbouring highschools applying for our co-op position. They come with their resumes and cover letters and are interviewed by a vet, tech, and our business manager. Interviewing is such a crucial process for landing one's dream job, and we like to make sure they get those skills!
Once chosen, the student is given a crash-course on restraint and cleaning strategies, along with an overview of how our basic procedures work. We welcome any and all questions! By the end of their co-op semester, depending on comfort level and proficiency, most students learn to run blood, urine and fecal samples, restrain patients, practice hospital hygiene, and above all - they will know whether the veterinary industry is for them.
Many of us here at Heartland have done a co-op term at our own highschools, and it is a wonderful tool for helping students find a career they're passionate about. It is a way to give back to our community, and we love it!
