Jack

My name is Jack. I am nine years old. I've wanted to be a vet since I was 5 years old because I love animals and I want to help them stay healthy and save their lives. I like learning about animals. I think being a vet will be fun. I have already started learning about what it takes to become a vet and gaining experience with animals. For my birthday, my parents took me and two of my friends to Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine's Open House. Then I began volunteering with CARA the day after I turned nine years old. (You have to be at least nine to volunteer.) CARA is a no kill animal shelter in my area that is home to over 300 dogs and 100 cats. I participate in 4-H and my project is veterinary science. I attended a workshop on veterinary science hosted by my local 4-H this summer. I enjoyed learning how to give injections and how to stitch up wounds and incisions even if it was just on an orange and a banana. Once I get a little older, I hope to be able to go on an educational tour hosted by a zoo veterinarian. One that I would love to be able to do is the one hosted by the Houston Zoo vet to the Galápagos Islands to learn more about efforts to save the Galápagos tortoise. Also I hope to be able to travel to the South Pacific with People to People. I think it would be fun to swim in the Great Barrier Reef and to see and learn about all the different species of marine life that live in the reef.
