“Becoming a veterinarian is a dream of mine since I was 3 years old. I have a great love of animals and I want to help them when they are sick or hurt, like James Herriot in All Creatures Great and Small. I have a pet hedgehog named Kiwi and a long haired miniature golden dachshund named Charly. However, it saddens me to say that my Charly passed away just last week. He got very sick and we took him to the emergency vet. Sadly that night he passed away. This experience taught me that being a vet can have difficult moments. … One of the great things about our school is the Living Materials Center (LMC). Kids come and take care of over 200 species of exotic animals at the LMC. I volunteered at LMC for the past three years and I mostly take care of an African Pigmy Hedgehog. …”
This is an excerpt from story and photograph that were submitted by Gabriella from Texas as part of her entry to the 2017 Become a Veterinarian Camp Contest. We were amazed at the passion our entrants had towards animals and all that they were doing to explore their dream of becoming a veterinarian. We wanted to share these powerful stories with everyone.
