I have been volunteering at the animal shelter for 5 months and I love every second I'm there. I spend an hour each week reading to cats. Sometimes I don't get much reading done because I am petting cats. My favorite memory so far at the animal shelter was when I got to know a scared three-legged cat named Cow. Cow was very skittish but after spending several months with her she got used to me petting her and she became very friendly. The best part about that memory was that, after a few months, Cow was finally brave enough to get adopted. What I love most about volunteering is getting to see cats (and sometimes dogs) adopted by their forever families.

I live in a small town and I volunteer at my local animal shelter. You could call a animal shelter that is about 30 or less minutes away. That's what I do, I go to one that is 30 minutes away because the one closest to me doesn't do that program. If I were you, I would call your local animal shelter and ask them specifically if you can read to cats for 1 hour as volunteer work. You might be surprised when they say, "Yes." Good luck!
