Being an undergrad trying to build experience in animal science hasn’t been easy. Between classes, working, and finding opportunities, a lot of it felt like I was just figuring things out as I went. From volunteering at an animal hospital to working in a lab setting and recently securing an internship with the NJ Racing Commission, none of it came in a straight line. There were definitely moments where I felt behind or unsure.
What helped the most was having mentors, people who gave me guidance, answered questions, and pushed me in the right direction. Over time, things started to come together through consistency and just showing up. I’ve also learned how important it is to invest in yourself and make time for what keeps you grounded.
It’s not a perfect path, but if you stay consistent, lean on the right people, and keep putting yourself out there, it’s possible.
